The Flame Award for Unit Excellence recognizes GI/Endoscopy Units who have shown a commitment to infection prevention, a supportive and educational work environment and positive patient outcomes. This award provides a roadmap for what is considered an exceptional work environment in a GI/Endoscopy nursing unit. Recipients of the Flame Award will be sent a framed document for display, recognition in SGNA's email newsletter, and mention at the SGNA Annual Course.

The SGNA Annual Course Distinguished Service Award acknowledges an SGNA member who has demonstrated service and leadership to the organization.
Our 2024 Distinguished Service Award Winner is Rhoda Redulla, DNP, RN, NPD-BC, FAAN
Dr Redulla is a recognized nurse leader, author, and speaker. Dr. Redulla is the Director of Nursing Excellence and Magnet Recognition at NewYork-Presbyterian providing strategic direction and leadership for 11 hospitals on the Magnet Recognition Program®. She is also the Associate Editor of Gastroenterology Nursing, the premier peer-reviewed journal for gastroenterology nurses. Dr. Redulla has created a legacy in her work on gastroenterology and hepatology practice and a trailblazer, influencing professional practice worldwide. Her exemplary work includes leading and supporting several organizations in the United States, UK, South America, and China to Magnet® designation. She has widely disseminated her work in authoring books and over a hundred podium presentations, book chapters, and peer-reviewed articles on professional development, evidence-based practice, gastroenterology, and Magnet®. Most recently, she published her book, Fast Facts for Making the Most of Your Career in Nursing.
For almost a decade, Dr. Redulla has led the Education committee of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA) at the national level. She provided committee leadership in setting the agenda and curriculum supporting the professional development of over 5,000 gastroenterology nurses in the country. She has made direct contributions to disseminate gastroenterology knowledge. She created and tested a novel nurse-driven pathway in Hepatitis C. She is a chapter author in the SGNA Core Curriculum, foundational for training novice gastroenterology nurses as well as preparing nurses for specialty certification. She has written book chapters on general gastroenterology, upper esophagus, diverticular disease, and the liver for nursing texts focused on NCLEX review, general nursing, and specialty practice. Through Cochrane Review summaries published in international peer reviewed journals, she consistently disseminates the latest synthesized systematic review findings for application to practice and policy. She was competitively selected for the inaugural SGNA Scholar program where she developed a systematic review on lactulose management of minimal hepatic encephalopathy. Dr. Redulla’s service and commitment to SGNA spanned several other areas including involvement in the Research Committee, Editorial Committee and Editorial Board for Gastroenterology Nursing before her current role as Associate Editor.
Through her work with global organizations like the Joanna Briggs Institute, Nursing Now Challenge, SGNA, and the academe, she has mentored emerging nurse leaders and authors with over a hundred progressing to publication, research, and doctoral education. She is also a lecturer for Yale University’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program, providing instruction and mentorship to doctoral student on clinical inquiry and evidence-based practice.
She completed her BSN and Master of Arts in Nursing at the University of Northern Philippines, Post Master’s Certificate in Nursing Education at the University of Pennsylvania, and Doctor of Nursing Practice at the Johns Hopkins University. She is a recipient of numerous awards including the Johns Hopkins University Outstanding Alumni Award and ANA-New York Award for Scholarship. Dr. Redulla is proud of her Filipino heritage and a recipient of several national and state level awards granted by the Philippine Nurses Association of America and Philippine Nurses Association of New Jersey, in recognition of her exemplary contributions in research and innovation. Rhoda Redulla is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

Gabriele Schindler Award: This award recognizes the individual who demonstrates excellence in gastroenterology clinical practice and who exemplifies the skill, knowledge and compassion of Gabriele Schindler, an early pioneer of GI patient care. SGNA presents this prestigious award annually to the member who best represents Schindler’s spirit of compassion, commitment, professionalism and caring.
Our 2024 Gabriele Schindler Clinical Excellence Award Winner is Michelle Juan, MSN RN CGRN
Michelle Juan has been a GI nurse for over 20 years. During this time, she has held many positions in endoscopy, EUS, GI research, clinical nursing, and leadership. She is currently a Nurse Navigator for special programs in GI at Indiana University Health. She has nearly 10 years of LEAN experience and is Silver trained. Michelle has led, participated in, and implemented several process improvement projects for her GI Division. Previously, Michelle has served on the SGNA Practice Committee, including as Chair. She has spoken at many regional and national conferences and is a Past President of SGNA.
Michelle has been a GI certified nurse since 2002. She has previously been recognized by her peers as GI Nurse of the Year and received a special service recognition award from her division for her leadership. She has also been honored with a Daisy award from a patient nomination. Michelle has previously authored and co-authored research articles related to gastroenterology.
Michelle current role as Nurse Navigator for Advanced Colonoscopy and Inherited Colorectal Cancer Syndromes matches well with her passion of caring for patients who are at high risk for colorectal cancer.
